FAQ

Everything You Need to Know About Lessons at Wehr Making Music

WHO SHOULD TAKE VOICE LESSONS?

Anyone Age 11 and Up

Around the age of 11 is when most people begin developing the voice they will have for the rest of their life. For students below this age, singing is still an important aspect of their music education, but this can be done through involvement in school or community choirs, and most especially, singing in the home. Additionally, students under the age of 11 should begin developing other necessary skills, such as note reading, rhythm, and ear training. Such skills can be acquired through instrumental study, particularly piano.

HOW LONG ARE LESSONS?

45 or 60 Minutes

Lesson lengths of 45 minutes or longer allow for an appropriate amount of time to be spent on all aspects of singing: warm ups, technique, and repertoire. Lessons shorter than these times often cut short one or more of these crucial elements. Lesson time will be determined based on a singer's age and skill level.

WHAT STYLE OF SINGING IS TAUGHT?

Based on the Student's Interest

While the main areas of expertise include classical and musical theatre genres, students are encouraged to bring music to their lessons that inspire them and which they have a genuine interest for. This often encourages students to practice more and continue the learning process. Because evidence-based pedagogy and functional training are the main teaching techniques, effective, healthy, and great singing can be developed through a wide variety of genres.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING TO MY LESSON?

Basic Items: Notebook, Pencil, Music

Just like playing soccer requires specialized equipment such as cleats and shinguards, voice lessons also require their own specialized equipment. The most basic items include a notebook for practice notes, a pencil to mark music, and of course, any repertoire that is currently being studied. Students are responsible for buying their own music based on the teacher's recommendation. It is also recommended that students organize their music within a 3-ring binder.

HOW DOES SCHEDULING WORK?

Lessons Scheduled Tuesdays 4:00pm - 7:00pm & Wednesdays 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Please reach out to schedule a regularly occurring lesson during one of these time slots. Time slots are allotted on a first-come/first-serve basis, however exceptions outside of these specific times may be allowed at the discretion of the teacher. Audition coaching is scheduled based on the availability of the teacher.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN'T MAKE MY SCHEDULED LESSON TIME?

24 Hours Notice Required

As long as 24 hours notice is given, students can expect a make-up to be scheduled within that same week of their original lesson. If a student fails to give 24 hours notice, or simply does not show up, payment for that lesson is still expected and a make-up lesson is not guaranteed. If a student is late, the lesson will still end at its appointed time and the time missed will not be made up.

CAN I SIT IN ON MY CHILD'S LESSON?

First Lesson - Yes

Parents may sit in on their child's first lesson, however, for subsequent lessons parents are asked to wait outside the studio. The comfort of the student is always a priority, and even singing in front of parents can make students self-conscious. Parents, can, however, look in at any time to ensure the well-being of their child.
